 Boreal Birds
Osprey Boreal forest birdOsprey

Our only raptor that hovers on beating wings and plunges into water feet first to catch fish. The head is largely white, suggesting bald eagle, but with a broad black cheek patch. With its wings spread can reach 2 m in width and stands 55 - 65 cm tall.
Both sexes are alike.

Peregrine Falcon Boreal forest birdPeregrine Falcon

Standing 40 - 55 cm tall its wing span can reach 1.5 m With pointed quick-beating wings and narrow tail it is best distinguished by its heavy black 'sideburns'. Adults are slaty-backed, barred and spotted below, young birds are brown and heavily streaked. Small birds, various rodents and insects are its main diet.
This species is endangered.

Loon Boreal forest birdLoon

Large (70 - 90 cm) with long body, checkered back, broken white collar and dagger like stout bill. Capable of many sounds from weird yodeling to falsetto wails and a maniacal quavering laughter - however, it is at night that its tremulous ha-oo-oo can be heard distinctly from any larger body of water in the Canadian Boreal Forest.
